The Department of Climate Change and Sustainable Development (SCDD) carries out research and development activities in the areas of sustainable development and climate change, arising from the provisions of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Regarding Agenda 2030`s actions, the department’s activities are aligned with SDG 13 “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts” and SDG 6 “Ensure availability and sustainable management of the water and sanitation for all.” In concern to the obligations of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), including those under the Kyoto Protocol (KP) and the Paris Climate Change Agreement, the department is engaged in activities related to mitigation and adaptation the effects of climate change. Therefore, SCDD provides technical and scientific support for the annual reports on Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF), part of the INEGES National Inventory of Greenhouse Gases. Other areas of expertise include identifying the impacts of climate change in relation to the state of natural and agricultural ecosystems, assessing the impacts on water resources in river basins and conducting analyzes for determining the bioclimatic aspects in urban environments.
