During 21st and 23rd of March, in Sovata (Mures County) was held the second workshop in the framework of the CarpathCC project.
The aim of the CarpathCC project is to analyze the Carpathian Region vulnerabilities to climate changes, this aim, together with proposing a portfolio of measures, represent the starting point of the project. A cost-benefit analysis was made for the following ecosystems: wetlands, grasslands, forests, in order to choose the most feasible measures for ecosystems adaptation to climate changes:
The project consortium consists of 7 partners, the coordinator being Environmental Regional Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC), with the support of Aquaprofit Consulting, receiving a valuable contribution from the National Institute for Research and Development in Environmental Protection (INCDPM) – Romania, from the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA) – Romania, from Arcadis Belgium N.V., from Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) – Germany, from Centre for Agricultural Research - Hungary, from Hungarian Academy of Sciences (CAR HAS), and also from Artelia Eau & Environment - France.
The main aim of this workshop was to inform the local stakeholders regarding the project evolution so far, and also to present the preliminary results related to the climate changes impact and the focal areas vulnerability to those.
The CarpathCC project holds great importance for Romania as almost 50% of the Carpathian Mountains are located in Romania, hence effects of climate changes could have significant effect on the country economy. In the light of this, out of the total focal areas, 3 of them being located in Romania are represented in the project:
- Rodna-Maramures
- Tarnava Mare
- Iron Gates Natural Park

The National Institute for Research and Development in Environmental Protection (INCDPM) already performed studies for the first 2 Romanian focal areas (Rodna-Maramures and Târnava Mare)
The workshop objectives were:
- To present the methodology which consisted the starting point for perfroming of cost-benefit analysis
- To involve local stakeholders in prioritizing specific ecosystem services in the focal areas
- To check the results of the CarpathCC project
The most productive part, regarding the results, is represented by the Working Groups activity:
1. WG1 for focal areas: Rodna Mountains and Maramures Mountains areas (national parks) focusing on forest habitat type

2. WG2 for focal areas: Tarnava Mare Area (Sighisoara, Targu Mures) focusing on seminatural grassland habitat type
3. WG3 for focal areas : Iron Gates National Park focusing on wetland habitat type
4. WG4 for focal areas : Djerdap National Park focusing on tourism
Mainly, the discussions regarded the threats posed by climate change on each habitat and on the ecosystem services and also the implementation feasibility of selected adaptation measures.
As a conclusion, the importance of this workshop consists in establishing future directions regarding the project implementation. It is also important that a connection between the stakeholders and the project partners was created through the working groups for each focal area.
